Spirit:

Vodka

Drinkware:

Rocks Glass

Served:

Rocks

Garnish:

Basil Leaf

About the Recipe

The drink was created by British Royal Navy surgeon Sir Thomas Gimlette in the 19th century, and it was originally made with equal parts of Gin and Lime Juice and was used as a way to prevent scurvy among sailors. The recipe eventually made its way to shore, where it became a popular cocktail, where bartenders tweaked the recipe making it much more palatable as well as using Vodka for non-Gin loving folks. You can use either spirit for a gimlet.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices cucumber (1/4-inch slices)

  • 1 ½ fresh large basil leaves

  • 1 ½ oz Vodka

  • 1 ½ oz Lemonade

  • ¼ oz fresh lime juice

Preparation

Muddle cucumber and basil in shaker. Combine rest of the ingredients and ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into glass with fresh ice.
